Did you know?
Henry the VIII's Chelsea Manor House

Hidden behind the leafy garden at the end of Cheyne studios by Cheyne walk, is all that is left of King Henry VIII 's old Manor House. It was built in 1536, before the embankment was built and was right on the edge of the river Thames, making it easy to travel by boat to the Tower of London or Richmond Palace. Alongside the remaining wall are some mulberry trees said to have been planted by Queen Elizabeth I. The manor house was also the home of Sir Hans Sloane, who died in 1753,after whom the nearby locations of Sloane Square and Sloane Street were named. The largest fruiting Olive Tree in the UK grows here in the garden which  is now the site of one of London's  many secret attractions. www.chelseaphysicgarden.co.uk

The King's Road, once a private royal route, is now days Chelsea's main carriageway. It starts in Sloane Square home of the department store- Peter Jones and continues to The Worlds End where the King's Road becomes less fashionable and changes to The New King’s Road, here it continues to Putney Bridge, home of the Annual Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. Shopping and dining are the King’s Road main attractions and although not quite so trendy as in the 1960’s, boutiques and upmarket designers offer cutting edge fashions to the Sloan Set whose Italian Scooters have been replaced by’ Chelsea Tractors’ the off road vehicles despised by many environmentalists’. www.rbkc.gov.uk

The National Army Museum

The National Army Museum’s purpose is to explain the impact that the British Army has had on the character of Britain, Europe and the world. A visit to the or Museum will show you how the actions of a few can affect the futures of many, and how Britain’s past has helped to shape the world – the world today and in the future.

From 1 April 2006, our galleries will be changing as a new and exciting plan for their development is implemented. All have been renamed, in line with the change in their interpretation. Some galleries will reflect change more immediately than others, and we count www.national-army-museum.ac.uk
